FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Why get a spray-on tan? Many people simply don't have the time to bake in the sun to achieve a dark tan. Spray-on tanning delivers a believable, natural-looking tan without the harmful effects of the sun or the tanning bed!

How long does a spray-on tan last? Depending on a person's activities and skin type, the tan lasts approximately 5 to 7 days (up to 10 for some people). With follow-up applications, a person can maintain the tan indefinitely.

How does spray-on tanning work? A solution containing DHA (dihydroxyacetone) is applied to the skin using a fine mist spray machine. The DHA reacts with amino acids in the cells of the outer layer of the skin, producing a “bronzing” without damaging the cells. The reaction looks “natural” as if from the sun. As the outer layer of skin cells slough off, the “tan” fades just like a suntan would fade.

Tanning Color Development Times With the new technology in sunless tanning, you will see color immediately and you can have a dark, natural-looking tan within 8 to 12 hours of application. Your tan will last about 5 to 7 days (up to 10 for some people) if properly cared for.

Is spray-on tanning safe? Yes! DHA has been used in the cosmetic industry for almost 30 years and was listed with the FDA in 1973. It is declared safe and suitable for use in cosmetics and drugs used to color the skin. DHA is derived from glycerin (vegetable origin), which is commonly used as a cosmetic and food ingredient. DHA is not absorbed into the body and poses no possibility of toxicity. However, if you are pregnant or nursing you should check with your doctor prior to booking a tanning appointment.

Can I still get a UV tan in addition to my spray-on tan? Yes, just remember that spray tanning does not provide any sunscreen protection, so you should apply sunscreen accordingly.

How long should I wait after the application before I can shower or sweat? We recommend 8 to 12 hours with no water whatsoever on your skin. This gives the DHA time to darken your skin cells.

How can I minimize exfoliation from hot tubs, swimming pools and the ocean after my tanning session? After your tan has developed (8-12 hours) and after your first shower, you can minimize water activity exfoliation by liberally and frequently applying a good, strong waterproof sunscreen prior to submerging yourself.

Will the tanning solution stain my clothes? The solution will wash off your skin after your first post-tan shower. But until then, the colors added to the solutions may stain some fabrics (for example, nylon, silk, wool and polyester). However, a good soaking in water will usually lift the stain from the fabric. Most fabrics and materials are completely safe from staining.

Should I shave before my tanning session? Yes. It is best to shave about 8 hours before the application. After your application, be sure to use a new razor as old, dull blades can remove the tanned skin cells.
